“Emptiness”, extends Su’s reflection on displacement through an intimate look at the dissolution of stability and its makeshift reconstitution because of the war. Her work emphasises lives, altered and destroyed with the loss of home, land and belongings.

She interprets their emotions through hollow shells as if the pieces that filled these haphazard shapes were bursting with the weight of memory, the overflow of refugees, the impulse to survive. Su aims to mirror the enduring struggle by shifting the way refugees are perceived and depicted every day in the media.

Esna moulds the knitted leather cords around a collection of cherished objects, making the pieces a reminder of a life left behind - an invisible yet burdensome reminder of refugees’ past. Su then retrieves the items to create these bare and irregular structures, silent repositories of the past.
