Made with the ancient lost wax casting process. This piece was developed first carved in wax with the fluted column being digitally printed. Over two weekends the waxes were sprued to allow channels through which the molten bronze can flow. It was then coated in ceramic shell. The wax was burned out of the mould in a kiln, leaving a cavity to be filled with bronze. This piece was cast on the banks of the Thames at London Sculpture Workshop.
KIM SUTHERLAND is an award winning, London-based artist whose work is a synthesis of tradition and personal narrative, often incorporating antique objects to infuse each piece with a rich patina of time. Kim’s practice spans the disciplines of metalwork, drawing and printmaking through an ongoing exploration of the ancient technique of intaglio etching - the ‘bite’ of line into metal – which allows her to create the symbolically ‘charged’ surfaces that sit at the heart of her work.
